Fitting instructions
For Best Results
Read and follow instructions BEFORE and DURING custom fitting of the dental
protector. The dental protector is fitted on the upper teeth.
What You Need To Begin
- A pot to boil water to heat the dental protector
- A clock to measure, in seconds, the steps in the fitting process
- A large fork or slotted spoon for removing the dental protector from boiling water
- A small plate on which to rest the dental protector to cool before fitting
- A mirror to aid in the fitting process
Fitting Instructions
- Fill a pot with a minimum of 3 inches of water. Heat the water to a rolling boil and
continue to boil for 1 minute.
- Carefully place dental protector into the boiling water, channel side down.
- Leave dental protector in the boiling water for 50 seconds.
- In order to achieve a proper fit, follow the bulleted instructions below, making sure
you bite into the soft material at 20 seconds after dental protector is removed from
boiling water.
- Remove dental protector from boiling water with a fork or slotted spoon and place
on a plate, channel side up. Start the 20 second countdown.
- Immediately carefully pick up dental protector by gently grasping the hard
underside, not the sticky top material.
- Use a mirror and put dental protector into your mouth.
- Prior to biting down put the tips of the front teeth as close as possible to the front of
dental protector.
- Firmly hold the teeth in place against dental protector.
- At the 20 second mark, bite down with the rest of your teeth until your teeth have
contacted the bottom of the dental protector; continue to bite down.
- IMMEDIATELY create a strong suction to draw the plastic material up into the roof
of the mouth and onto the sides of the teeth. Do this by keeping the mouth closed
and strongly sucking in. Use your tongue to help push the material up into the roof of the mouth and onto the teeth. With your teeth clenched, use your thumbs to firmly
press the soft material against the outside of your teeth.
- Now, open your mouth and use your thumbs to firmly mold the soft material up and
around all areas of teeth and towards the roof of the mouth.
- Leave the dental protector in place on your teeth for at least 30 seconds while biting
down on the protector, and periodically creating a suction.
- If the length of the dental protector extends beyond your back molars, the dental
protector can be shortened by using a single-edge razor blade or a sharp knife.
You will know that you have successfully completed the fitting process if the dental
protector stays "locked" in place.
If you do not achieve a comfortable and snug fit that stays locked in place:
- Place the dental protector back into boiling water for
around 20 seconds or until you can mold the soft material.
- Wait until it has cooled slightly and mold the plastic back
to resemble the original product.
- Let the dental protector cool to room temperature.
- Repeat the fitting instructions.
