1. Sizing and Fitting Process
How is the Doctor’s® NightGuard™ supposed to fit?
The NightGuard should fit snugly and securely on your teeth, and should not fall off when you open your mouth. Additionally, it should be comfortable and allow you to close your mouth completely. It should be 2-3 mm in thickness (i.e. a comfortable amount of space between your upper and lower teeth).

Make sure the water reaches a warm enough temperature during the fitting process. If the NightGuard is not malleable enough, it will prevent you from making a good impression of your teeth. This can cause the NightGuard to feel bulky and uncomfortable. It is important that the water begins to boil before you start the timer.

It feels like my NightGuard™ is too bulky?
Make sure you have made the impression deep enough during the fitting process.

How can I determine if I have excess material on my NightGuard™ ?
You should be able to close your lips and mouth comfortably and keep them closed. If there is too much of the clear material making this difficult you should dip the NightGuard into very warm water for a few seconds to soften and then shave off excess material with a single edge razor or other sharp cutting utensil. You can also re-dip into very warm water after trimming and then re-smooth with your fingers to remove rough edges.

Should my NightGuard™ have holes once I complete the fitting process?
The finished NightGuard should not have any holes in it, as this would compromise its efficacy and not provide adequate protection against grinding. The goal is to have a 2-3 mm thickness throughout the entire NightGuard.

Biting through the NightGuard can lead to holes in it. The impression should be made by using the force of your fingers only. When you are fitting the NightGuard, bite slightly into it just enough to make an impression. Also, use both hands at the same time to ensure equal pressure on both sides.

Additionally, your initial impression should be centered in the clear material and should encompass all of your teeth. If the NightGuard appears too narrow (this will be especially evident in the back molar area), it is possible to widen the dental protector by up to a 1/2 inch. This can be achieved by widening the "U"-shape of the dental protector when it first comes out of the water.

Am I supposed to have saliva buildup from the NightGuard™ ?
It may take a week or two to get used to wearing your NightGuard. If, after this "break in" period, the saliva buildup does not stop, your NightGuard may not have been fit properly.

Why did my NightGuard™ split during the fitting process?
Your NightGuard may have "split" because it was not fit properly. Your impression in the device may have been too deep.

I wear a partial. Can I fit the NightGuard™ onto the partial or should I avoid those teeth and fit the other?
The NightGuard will stick to partials, especially during the fitting process. Do not use the NightGuard if you have partials on both sets of teeth. Avoid fitting the NightGuard on the one set that has partials.
