Temporomandibular Disorder
TMD (temporomandibular disorder) can occur as a result
of bruxism. The temporomandibular joint connects the
lower jaw to the skull. The movement and pressure on
the joint during grinding can cause numerous TMD
symptoms, including:
- Pain or tenderness in the jaw and surrounding
area, especially when you chew or open your
mouth wide
- Popping or clicking sounds
- Jaws that “lock” when they’re open or closed
- Chewing difficulty
- A dull ache or stiffness in facial muscles
- Earaches or a feeling of clogged ears
- Headaches, especially in your temples
