Temporomandibular Disorder

TMD (temporomandibular disorder) can occur as a result of bruxism. The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull. The movement and pressure on the joint during grinding can cause numerous TMD symptoms, including:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw and surrounding area, especially when you chew or open your mouth wide
  • Popping or clicking sounds
  • Jaws that “lock” when they’re open or closed
  • Chewing difficulty
  • A dull ache or stiffness in facial muscles
  • Earaches or a feeling of clogged ears
  • Headaches, especially in your temples
